Notes
When a natural drainage channel near a Nevada development started threatening the integrity of residential properties, the owners were presented with a significant engineering challenge. The channel was characterized by high-velocity water flow, exceeding 14 feet per second, posing a considerable erosion risk.
The property owner aimed to transform the wash into a grassy park to enhance the community’s aesthetic value. However, initial assessments determined that a standard grass-lined channel would be incapable of withstanding the high-velocity flow. Traditional turf reinforcement mats were also unsuitable due to their vulnerability to UV degradation and vehicle wear during maintenance events. The use of reinforced concrete, although a robust solution, was considered excessively costly and aesthetically undesirable.
After careful evaluation, Pyramat® was selected due to its proven performance in high-velocity flow conditions and tensile strength of 4000 lb/ft, capable of withstanding vehicular traffic. The implementation of Pyramat® successfully stabilized Abbott Wash and established lush greenery while protecting the surrounding properties. This innovative approach resulted in a net cost savings of over $1.2 million compared to the concrete alternative and significantly enhanced the community’s aesthetic appeal.
