Gabions are box-like structures, typically filled with stones. They stabilize slopes, stream banks, and shorelines. Other uses include retaining walls and wing walls. Gabions offer superior resistance to moving water and they drain freely. Their modularity and ability to be stacked in various shapes make them effective erosion control materials in many applications.
Gabions, or gabion baskets, are primarily made of steel wire mesh. Galvanized steel wire is most common, but PVC-coated wire is often used for longer life in water or corrosive environments.
